I think I’ve invented a touch screen Promethean

I often wondered how Promethean pens required no power whatsoever to work. Most other solutions require you to stick an AA battery in them and you’ll get a year or so out of them before having to replace the batteries. Promethean pens will go on for ever and ever relatively. So I asked the head of development and he told me that there is a coil of copper wiring through the pen which reacts to the wiring inside the whiteboard. This got me thinking about a touch screen Promethean board. (more…)

Promethean’s €800 solution is actually brilliant

A while back, Promethean introduced their most basic package of all. It costs €800 and you get a wireless slate and their excellent Activ Primary software. You also get a little hub, (much like the eBeam or Mimio), which sticks to your existing whiteboard. Now, although you cannot interact with the whiteboard directly, you can use the slate to do all the interacting. (more…)

Two meetings with Promethean

I’ve had a fairly surreal couple of weeks since I published my findings about Interactive Whiteboards. Promethean Ireland emailed me to arrange a meeting. EduBlogs is offering free blogs at your own domain

Now there’s no excuse not to run your own school blog! Edublogs.org is a web site that offers all educational institutions, teachers and pupils to run their very own web blog. Before today, if you used this service, you could choose an address: SOMETHING.edublogs.org. However, now you can pick a nice domain name for $25, for example www.scoilsomething.com and they set everything else up for you. (more…)

The first ever Irish Interactive Whiteboard survey

I gave a course on Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) this week and got hold of 5 different types of IWB. As part of the course, I got teachers to check out all the options without interfering salespeople then surveyed them on their experiences. It is clear that Promethean’s beauty has won it many fans. Smart also performed well. As for the rest… well download and read my report and see for yourself. My own opinions slip in between questions but I must admit my mind was changed a little.
