And the IPPN Cheapest Interactive Whiteboard Solution is…

Good news for Anseo.net’s sponsors, SmartBoard – one of their resellers beat all the competition to become the cheapest fully-featured Interactive Whiteboard Solution.   Liosdoire Computers, based in Co. Kerry, are a very well-known company, which opened in 2002.

Lisdoire Computers – the cheapest IWBs in Ireland

They have been doing the education exhibition circuit since I became aware of Interactive Whiteboards and their salesmanship and service is individual and, as far as I could see, very competitive. (more…)

Promethean software won’t be free but…

The New Inspire EditionOk, so it’s not going to be free, but Promethean’s new software, to be released in March can be summed up in one word – sexy.  Daryl, their software guy, allowed me to have a sneak preview at it at IPPN and there are some excellent improvements.  The other great news is that if you own a different IWB, you can download the software restriction-free for €99.  For a piece of software that was up until now worth (in my estimation) about €400-500, this is a bargain. Is Promethean Software about to be free?

Are my dreams about to come true?  Last summer I met with two Promethean representatives and I spoke to them about SmartBoard’s Notebook software and advised them that they offered it for free.  I suggested to them that ActivPrimary may do something similar never thinking it would happen as it is one of the best pieces of software for Interactive Whiteboards around.  A collegue of mine emailled with the following statement from Ian Curtis, the head of Promethean in the UK and Ireland: (more…)

Software for Senior Classes

A principal recently contacted me to ask for my advice on suitable software for 4th class pupils.  I thought I would share my response on Anseo.net as it may help others in a similar situation.  I was happy to see that this principal was still using a piece of software that I developed with Robbie O’Leary a few years ago.  Below is my reply.

Note:  My recommendations, I feel, would also be suitable for any class from 3rd class upwards.

Can’t we skip “ai” and the other digraphs?

When I began Jolly Phonics I was a little unsure about the order as I expected the cildren to find the digraphs difficult, however, I went ahead and was delighted to find that they simply accepted that a digraph might be used to represent a sound just as a single letter might be. (more…)

One week left to TouchIT

There’s only one week left before the Irish launch of the new TouchIT Interactive Whiteboard and frankly I’m very excited.  This could be the best IWB yet!  So far, there has only been one IWB that lets you interact with your finger and it costs over €5,000.  This one costs half that and appears to be just as good or even better.

Irish Teachers’ Attitude to Web 2.0

I recently surveyed 100 teachers – I wanted more but I think there’s a limit on Survey Monkey‘s basic package – about their views on Internet applications.  I wanted to check what web 2.0 applications they used and which ones they trusted.  I wanted to see if my suspicions – that Irish primary teachers were scared to post their opinions on a public forum – were true.  Effectively, they were less true than I thought.

Would you prefer to lose your job or take a paycut?

Hi everyone!

I don’t know if anyone has attended their union meetings this week but the word “strike” is being bandied around, to me it seems like if the government cut our pay or our pensions, then the union will put a ballot to the members and if we agree to strike, that is it! (more…)

A new start to the year for me!

Happy New Year!

Yes, I know we are well into the New Year but it is never too late!

I started my new job last week, a new school, a new class and a new position! Started as a principal teacher of a 4 teacher school in Athy. Is it quite crazy to say that I feel settled in after 3 days? So much happened last week! I had to settle my own class in, 3rd and 4th Class.I introduced them to the Golden Time system and they are well impressed!I also teach Irish to the 5th and 6th class there while another teacher takes my class for maths..I miss maths, I never loved it as a child and struggled with it all the way but I think I am a really good Maths teacher! Is there a link there? (more…)

TouchIT – new kid on the block

There’s a new Interactive Whiteboard on the block.  It’s called Touch IT and it’s very very interesting.  Why?  This seems to be the only other IWB apart from the Smartboard that allows you to control it using your finger.  And why is that a big deal?  The reason is its price.
