When you buy an interactive whiteboard, you are given hardware and software. The hardware includes things like: the projector, the speakers and board itself . You also get a CD with the software that allows a person to interact with the computer. These are known as the drivers. These drivers let the computer know that it is attached to another device, (the IWB), and it lets the device know that it is attached to a computer.
This CD usually also contains another piece of software, which lets you harness that interaction. Every company produces their own native software – Smart use Notebook, Promethean use ActivStudio, EBeam use Scrapbook, Mimio use Lynx and so on. Some companies realise that the software that comes with their boards isn’t very good so they provide different piece of software by default. For example, the Rainbow IWB and TouchIT IWB come with EasiTeach, which works with any board.
The most popular software in Ireland for IWBs is Promethean’s ActivStudio which comes by default with Promethean IWBs. However, this software is not dependent on having a Promethean Board. Therefore, you can buy Promethean’s software and use it on any IWB. The same can be said for any other Interactive Whiteboard software – it is not dependent on the board. In other words, you can use any software be it Scrapbook, Notebook, Promethean or EasiTeach on any IWB.
However, it is important to check with individual companies if their software is allowed to be used on other boards. For example in 2016, SMART decided that Notebook would no longer be allowed to be used on any other type of board.
