Are routers and switches the same?

Switches and Routers connect to each other but are not the same thing. A Router is the box that gets the Internet from the provider. You can access the Internet by plugging a computer directly into a network point of a router so there’s no need for switches. Usually, however, routers only have a couple of network points and limited WiFi capabilities so they tend to only be useful in a domestic setting.

A Switch (which is a modern version of a Hub) connects to a router to allow many computers and WiFi enabled devices to connect to the Internet. In a school setting, you may need to connect hundreds of devices so you may need a few switches, which usually come in sizes of 24 and, sometimes, 48.
