Hiring Professionals for School Web Sites

local-professionals
More often, today, a school web site is most likely going to be the first thing a prospective family will see before they decide to take a step into enrolling their child in a school. If you don't have a web site or your web site hasn't been updated for a long time, it doesn't look good. Essentially, your school's web site is your school's prospectus. It's therefore very tempting to ask a professional web designer to make you a beautiful looking web site. While this is nothing new, (schools have been paying for web design since the mid 1990s), the whole dynamic of web site design has completely transformed. [pullquote align="left"]Today's web sites must be dynamic and be updated regularly by staff.[/pullquote]Back in the early days of school web sites, web sites tended to be static affairs that were generally there to give information about...

New Department of Education Web Site

The new DES web site
The Department of Education recently revamped its web site. For those who had the displeasure of having to navigate the previous incarnation, it was welcome news. The new web site is not just a lick of paint, although it desperately needed one. The designers have attempted to categorise the mass of news, circulars and initiatives in an easy to maneuver web site. [caption id="attachment_6103" align="aligncenter" width="300"] The new DES web site[/caption] From the screenshot above, it is immediately obvious that the drab design that preceded it has completely gone and we are welcomed with a 3-columned affair. The first column starts with a welcome message from the Minister, followed by a decent menu system. The menu system has a direct link to the DES circulars, which is a huge relief for principals like me as they were so difficult to...

Tips on Building a School Web Site: Wandesforde School

wandesfordelogo
One of the parents from Wandesforde School asked me to have a look at the web site she designed for them this year.  Wandesforde School is a small three teacher school in Castlecomer in Co. Kilkenny.  Strangely enough, I know the school very well as I gave summer courses in it for two years.  The principal at the time had mentioned that she was looking at updating their web site and a few years later, this was the result. Before I begin, I must reiterate that I am not a web designer and would never claim to be.  However, I do believe that a school's web site should reflect what is  inside the school walls.   I think that a school web site should provide two things: a brochure and a portfolio of the school.  The brochure part of the site should contain all the information about the school and all the things that make it the school that it...

Tips on Building a School Web Site: St. Corban's BNS

stcorbensreview
St. Corban's Boys' National School in Naas, Co. Kildare.  It is a school, which has experienced a fairly rapid growth over the last number of years.  Anseo.net was asked to have a look through St. Corban's BNS's web site to highlight some of the content to help other schools in their development of a school web site. Over the last few months, we have suggested a number of ideas for making a decent school web site.  In general, a school web site should provide two things: a brochure and a portfolio of the school.  The brochure part of the site should contain all the information about the school and all the things that make it the school that it is.  It should also look well to showcase the school in the best light.  The portfolio should be a constantly evolving showcase of all the work that is going on in the school.  This should be the...
